Although bits of the Friedman’s life story may have been fictionalized by Orlev, what is clear is that this refugee’s life story is a case of truth being stranger than fiction. END SPOILER ALERT There is so much drama in this film that it would just be over the top, were it not based on a true story. SPOILER ALERT The difference between Belle Sebastian and ‘Run Boy Run’ is that here the dog gets shot after just a few minutes.

To give you an idea: when Srulik, as Friedman’s character is named in the story, gets a dog early on in the film the story starts to look like Belle & Sebastian, which is quite a sad story in its own right. ‘Run Boy Run’ is very direct in portraying the horrors that Jewish refugees went through while trying to survive, and that makes the film not suitable for younger viewers.
